Simple Joys Matter

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

Hey there, reader. Thanks for taking the time to stop by. Whatever you are walking through, I pray the Lord restores you, strengthens you, and places you on a firm and spacious space. God is an ever-present help and strength, and He deeply loves you.

"Will life always be this bleak?" Maybe you've found yourself in this position. I can all too well relate.

Unwelcome news was delivered to my family, and suddenly all I could think over and over again..."Would life ever be the same?"

It's easy to be muddled down in the numbness or shock of pain. Seeing joy in life doesn't seem possible if you're in this boat. Maybe you've been in this boat for a long time.

What's a person to do when there is no joy in life?

There is no cure-all answer. Y'all know that; life is complex and things take time. There is only encouragement that we do not have to be slaves or victims to our circumstances. So where to begin?

Start small. Simple joys matter, seek them out. Notice them.

Notice when the sun comes through the blinds and warms your living room floor with an orange glow.

Notice when the leaves fall on the ground and cover the earth with different patterns.

Notice the smell of fresh-cut grass.

Notice the sound of birds singing to each other across the wooded trees.

Notice the warm cup in your hands after filling it with fresh coffee.

Notice the font of book you are reading and how it seems to bring to life the story its words hold.

Notice the sky and how it shifts hues as the day wakes up, goes on and comes to a close.

Notice the clouds and how they can be wispy, thick, or stretched far.

Notice the dog that makes eye contact with you and wags its tail as he and his owner walk on by.

Notice the people around you, and how they are each going about their lives, put on this earth for a reason.

Sometimes the joys that inspire us to know we'll be okay on any given day, are the small joys we encounter in each average moment. Dare I say sometimes these joys matter more than any mountain-top experience.

These simple joys reveal to us in the midst of chaos that God is still good, still faithful, and always will be. Life may seem stagnant or chaotic, but thank You God, that simple joys exist and matter.

My simple joy today is the sun coming through the windows and lighting up our room this morning. Can you notice a simple joy before today is done?
